SCREAMING FEMALES "Castle Talk" (Don Giovanni - DG 37) CD (UPC: 616822093221 - CDSCREACast)
SCREAMING FEMALES "Castle Talk" (Don Giovanni - DG 37) LP (UPC: 616822093214 - LPSCREACast)
(STREET DATE - 9/14/2010) ***Last year, SCREAMING FEMALES toured relentlessly in support of their critically acclaimed third album Power Move. Their hard work landed them spots opening for Dinosaur Jr., Throwing Muses, and Jay Reatard, plus dates touring with Arctic Monkeys and the Dead Weather. The year brought them to a wider mainstream consciousness, gaining attention for their punk rock sensibilities and their raucous live shows driven by front woman MARISSA PATERNOSTER's famed guitar heroics. On their new album, Castle Talk, the trio proves their abilities as more than just a pint-sized guitar shredder. Castle Talk showcases their growth together as a unit, as a band, with some of their most complex and confident songwriting to date.
SAMIAM "Orphan Works" (No Idea - NIR 279) CD (UPC: 633757027923 - CDSAMIAOrph)
(STREET DATE - 9/14/2010) ***Studio outtakes, in-studio radio shows and live recordings from the busiest six years of SAMIAM. "Strange to think what it was like back then...I have to admit, the '90s were often a trial, there were soaring 'highs' and a few doleful 'lows'. But years later, even thinking of loading our gear into a trailer at 4 am. seems...uh, eventful. At the time I might have been wondering what the fuck I was doing with my life but I now tend to romanticize Samiam's past. I love to remind James of the time in Vienna a dog walked up to him mid-song, sniffed his leg and pissed on his amp. If that isn't a priceless moment, I don't know what is. We performed in other prodigious situations, made loads of friends and thought 'music' instead of 'day job.' Not to say it was the easy, rock star fun people daydream of... Samiam was a garage band thrust into a world of constant touring, major labels and blown transmissions. Yet, the fact that we were basically failures in the eyes of the music industry didn't change the simple fact that we were young and having fun. Yay us!"-Sergie. CD exportable worldwide. No export to the UK on vinyl (upcoming).
NITE JEWEL "Am I Real?" (Gloriette - GL 005) 12" (LPNITE Am I)
***In the last two years, somewhere in between the bedroom and the studio proper (the living room?), the six songs of Am I Real? were made and the tape hiss barely made it (please see B-side opener "Falling Far"). Featuring subtly re-vamped and improved selections from last year's hard-to-obtain You F O Euro tour CD, the EP also offers the newer fully established ornate melancholy of "Forget You & I" and the sophisticatedly restrained funk of the closing title track featuring DANIEL & ANDREW AGED of TEEN INC. Also found on this release are the further benefits of master facilitator and now-official NJ band member COLE MGN.
SOFT METALS "Cold World Melts" (Captured Tracks - CT 069) 12" (LPSOFT Cold)
***Here's the debut vinyl from the Portland duo SOFT METALS. Formed in 2009, the band have been playing a ton of shows on the West Coast and garnering new fans with every stop. Their music is tight, romantic, electronic pop with influences from a variety of dance and post-punk sub-genres. "If you're a fan of Glass Candy or The Chromatics, or just anything Johnny Jewel or Italians Do It Better produce/release, then step right up... Soft Metals come heavy with the Italo rhythms and sultry vocals, but aren't content to just keep things pulsating and dreamy. There's a heavy Industrial and Darkwave influence that gives each song a film of grime and debauchery. If you're into anything remotely dark, synthy and romantic, every single Soft Metals track thus far has been like aural cat nip. "-Mishka NYC. First 500 on White Wax.
SUPERCHUNK "Majesty Shredding" (Merge - MRG 380) CD (UPC: 673855038025 - CDSUPERMaje)
SUPERCHUNK "Majesty Shredding" (Merge - MRG 380) LP (UPC: 673855038018 - LPSUPERMaje)
(STREET DATE - 9/14/2010) ***Majesty Shredding is a powerful document of SUPERCHUNK as a band, augmented as needed with well-placed harmonies, keyboards, and guitar overdubs (and some backing vocals courtesy of the MOUNTAIN GOATS' JOHN DARNIELLE). Since releasing their first 7-inch in 1989, Superchunk has run the gamut of milestone albums: early punk rock stompers, polished mid-career masterpieces, and lush, adventurous curveballs. Conventional wisdom holds that a band two decades into its career can only rehash or reinvent, but with Majesty Shredding, Superchunk has done something entirely different. Neither a return nor a departure, Majesty Shredding telescopes two decades into 41 indelible, action-packed minutes. It is the sound of youthful exuberance fine-tuned with grown-up confidence. And it may very well be Superchunk's best record yet. No Export
CROCODILES "Sleep Forever" (Fat Possum - FP 1226) CD (UPC: 767981122625 - CDCROCOSlee)
(STREET DATE - 9/14/2010) ***Last year BRANDON WELCHEZ and CHUCK ROWELL released their acclaimed debut album as CROCODILES. Straddling vast sonic terrains, throbbing kraut rock, expansive shoegaze and irresistibly danceable disco-punk jams, their previous album Summer Of Hate caught the ear of one JAMES FORD (SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO). Together, all three headed into the desert in early 2010 to create Summer Of Hate's psychedelic, hypnotic and anthemic followup. Raw it may be, but Sleep Forever is still an unmistakably more refined beast than its predecessor. Drums and organ whirls envelope you on tracks like "Mirrors" and "Sleep Forever," which nod to Ladies and Gentlemen... era Spiritualized as much as they do Neu! and The Velvet Underground. Meanwhile, Brandon's tough Cali sneer gives it's most emotional performance to date in "All My Hate and My Hexes Are For You." Back with a full five-piece live band and a summer of open roads ahead of them, it seems unlikely that Crocodiles will ever have to do anything more mundane than soundcheck again.
WALKMEN "Lisbon" (Fat Possum - FP 1228) CD (UPC: 767981122823 - CDWALKMLisb)
WALKMEN "Lisbon" (Fat Possum - FP 1228) LP (UPC: 767981122816 - LPWALKMLisb)
(STREET DATE - 9/14/2010) ***Lisbon was recorded over the course of eight months beginning in the fall of 2009 with producer CHRIS ZANE (Passion Pit, Les Savy Fav, Tokyo Police Club). The band then traveled to Dallas to finish the album with producer JOHN CONGLETON (St. Vincent, Explosions in the Sky). Featuring the band's signature vintage instrument-sound, Lisbon will showcase "a lot of stuff that's Elvis-sounding, like early Elvis and Sun Records kind of sounds," says frontman HAMILTON LEITHAUSER.
THE YOUNG "Voyagers Of Legend" (Mexican Summer - MEX 049) LP (UPC: 184923100495 - LPYOUNGVoya)
***The debut full-length from this Austin rock four-piece exchanges the raucous pop-punk of the band's earliest days for something all their own. These are tightly wound missives shot directly into the dirt and allowed to slump, revealing a brace of heartbroken, doggedly determined punk rock ballads, jagged and rough, crying into their beers at the end of the bar. Songs this specific in mood and motive, with parts as anthemic and righteous, haven't been heard since GBV hung it up.
PROTEX "Strange Obsession" (Sing Sing - SING 016) LP (UPC: 845350025255 - LPPROTEStra)
***"What you hold in your hands has long been the holy grail of fervent record collectors worldwide. Rumors have abound that this album had been released in Holland and or that there were a small number of white label test pressings in existence but none of these claims have ever been substantiated. As far as I can ascertain, this is the first time that ten of these tracks have become commercially available anywhere. The fruits of these CHAS CHANDLER sessions had only been previously hinted at with the bands final singles and the track 'All I Wanna Do Is Rock 'N' Roll' that appeared on the American only Polydor compilation album Made In Britain. The Northern Ireland punk scene of the late 1970s had its own very distinctive sound. The bands from Northern Ireland were much younger than their English counterparts and were totally devoid of pretence and trickery. The stripped down to basics ethos of punk was evident in the 'Belfast' sound. It was primitive and elemental but there was a huge amount of strong melodies and good lyrics thrown into the mix too. For me this release only reinforces that view further."- Sean O'Neill (co-author of It Makes You Wanna Spit!)
AMBARCHI / FENNESZ / PIMMON / REHBERG / ROWE "Afternoon Tea" (Weird Forest - WEIRD 055) DBL.LP
(LPAMBARAfte) ***Who would have thought a relaxed sunny afternoon, newfound friendships and some spur-of-the-moment would have resulted in what's been described as 'one of the most compelling documents of both free improvisation and electronica' (All Music Guide)? It's the people involved in Afternoon Tea-originally released in 2000 on German label Ritornell and now available on vinyl for the first time with a new master, bonus tracks and newly discovered live recordings. The twin guitar presence of AMM's KEITH ROWE and OREN AMBARCHI and kindred spirits of the laptop, Sydney's PIMMON, Vienna's CHRISTIAN FENNESZ and PETER REHBERG, made it a momentous day. Afternoon Tea stands as a highpoint of the then-emerging intersection between Powerbook performance and guitar improvisation. All subtley, nuance and detail, it is a revelation of restraint. Built on a steadying flow of burbling rhythm, the quintet slowly weave around each others' sonics in layers to create a tonal palette immersive in its atmosphere and magnetic in its compulsion. Remastered in May 2009 and packaged in deluxe Stoughton gatefold jacket with artwork designed by STEPHEN O'MALLEY. Vinyl edition of the CD reissue from Black Truffle Records, includes the same bonus tracks. First time ever available on vinyl. One-time pressing of 500 copies.
DRIVAN "Disko" (Smalltown Supersound - STS 185) LP (UPC: 60011684612 - LPDRIVADisk)
(STREET DATE - 9/14/2010) ***NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL!!! DRIVAN is a new band consisting of KIM HIORTHOY, LISA OSTBERG, LOUISE PETERHOFF & KRISTIINA VIILALA. Meeting in Stockholm in fall 2007, the band worked on a multi-faceted dance piece by choreographer and performance artist GUNILLA HEILBORN, entitled "The Potato Country." Upon completion of its run in Stockholm, Hiorthoy asked Lisa, Louise, and Kristiina if they would be interested in collaborating further. Drivan is a group first and foremost, with everyone cooperating on lyrics and melodies, and although there are flourishes of Hiorthoy's signature sound, the recordings' folk-oriented and organic feel has the band drawing more from Swedish folk and prog of the '70s, as well as Stina Nordenstam's People Are Strange album. No Export.
DISKJOKKE "En Fin Tid" (Smalltown Supersound - STS 184) LP (UPC: 600116848413 - LPDISKJEn F)
(STREET DATE - 9/14/2010) ***NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL!!! Received a 7.2 rating from Pitchfork. At once hypnotic, stomping and futuristic, this record maintains their trippy, epic prog-disco aesthetic without sacrificing melody or subtlety. The album flows like a journey in sound, with each song seamlessly drifting into the next. The album, recorded and entirely self-produced in DISKJOKKE's new studio, draws its inspiration from Holger Czukay's mid '80s period, Brian Eno, Arthur Russell, European disco, Allan Parsons, Tangerine Dream, Arthur Lyman and Craig Leon. Limited edition of 500 copies. No Export.
FREDRIK "Trilogi" (Kora - TKR 017) DBL.LP (LPFREDRTril) (STREET DATE - 9/14/2010)
***NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL!!! Received a 7.0 rating from Pitchfork. On stage this sextet can be seen playing banjo, clarinet, cello, wind up music boxes & hand made instruments along side bass, guitars & drums. This second outing is more consistently inward-looking & takes on themes like social realities & subconscious geography. The melodies are more serpentine & the textures decidedly darker. Three EP's bearing the titles "Holm", "Ava" and "Ner", all fictional names roughly signifying "Frozen Forest Island", "Water Through Sound" and "The Inside Underground" are combined here on two LPs. Beautiful Gatefold Package using deluxe recycled paper stock.
BRIDESHEAD "Comeback" (Shelflife - LIFE 071) 10" (UPC: 4042564123043 - LPBRIDECome)
(STREET DATE - 9/14/2010) ***Although they've been out of the public eye for eight years, BRIDESHEAD have been honing their whimsical pop sound. The album picks up exactly where they left off: the dream soundtrack for a serene summer day where '90s Swedish pop & '80s jangle mingle in the air. Don't call it a comeback. They've been here for years, banging out music that's both referential and reverent to the pop past mixed with their own upbeat signature vocals. No Export.
BRUCE HAACK "Farad (The Electric Voice)" (Stones Throw - STH 2221) DBL.LP (UPC: 659457222116 - LPHAACKFara) ***Up until now, the legacy of BRUCE HAACK (1931-1988) has only existed in the quirks, glitches, and audio signals of modern techno-luminaries such as Kraftwerk and Daft Punk, but unlike the aforementioned, Haack has been left completely unacknowledged. Yet with Stones Throw's release of Farad (The Electric Voice), the electronic music pioneer will be lifted out of the sooty fields of obscurity and rightfully placed into the spotlight of the Electronic music continuum. Farad (The Electric Voice) specifically focuses on tracks using the "Farad", the name Bruce gave to his vocoder, one of the first musical vocoders at the time, which he invented. It includes out of print and unreleased tracks accessed via negotiations with Haack's estate.
ALEXANDER ROBOTNICK "Ce N'est Qu'un Debut" (Medical Records - MR 002) LP (LPROBOTCe N)
***BACK IN STOCK - LAST COPIES AVAILABLE!!! ALEXANDER ROBOTNICK (aka MAURIZIO DAMI) is an Italian electronic musician. He made his debut on the Italian music scene as the founding member of AVIDA, a dance-cabaret band featuring Daniele Trambusti and Stefano Fuochi. In 1983 he attained international popularity with his track "Problemes D'Amour," published first by the Italian label Materiali Sonori and then by Sire-Wea. "Problemes D'Amour" went on to become a "cult track" of the disco scene. It became quite an import hit in America's underground club scene, and sparked the mini-LP Ce N'est Qu'un Debut that same year (originally released on Materiali Sonori in 1984). Ce N'est Qu'un Debut consists of six captivating tracks including the hit "Problemes D'Amour," as well as the track "Dance Boy Dance," which has appeared on other cult disco compilations. Ce N'est Qu'un Debut will appeal to lovers of Italo disco, early new wave, and minimal pop. LP is released on high quality vinyl in a limited edition of 500 copies (individually numbered).
OUR LOVE WILL DESTROY THE WORLD "Blue Eyes Are My Reward" (Krayon - OUR LBLUE) LP
(LPOUR Lblue) ***Jawdropping new collection of crop circles etched in sonic candy-floss by New Zealand's beardsmith/noise-farmer CAMPBELL KNEALE (BIRCHVILLE CAT MOTEL). Rated by the horses mouth as the best thing he ever made, EVER, 'Blue Eyes Are My Reward' shimmers like an icicle-clad forest resplendent in its own crystalline magnificence. Snakecharming groove, dublike boomph, and bleary eyed strum blast the path out of a decidedly greying world of so-so metalized-myspace-drone, into a miniaturized drone-prairie of superpowered starshine and dazzling stellar- commotion. Beyond the tyrannous clutches of omnipresent zeroes and ones, the macro and micro merge into an all encompassing nowhere of sound, each expansion checked by equal contraction like Messaens 'modes of limited transportation' scrambled by the Large Hadron Collider and replayed by one of those little twinkly watch reflections that occasionally dance around on the roof. Beautiful. 180-gram vinyl, everything by Campbell Kneale.
OUTER SPACE "Outer Space" (Arbor - ARBOR 098) LP (LPOUTEROute)
***JOHN ELLIOTT's OUTER SPACE project is a laboratory for electronic investigation. Acting as a continuance of the studies of mid 20th century electronic music composers such as Nik Pascal and Laurie Spiegel, Elliott's music is deeply indebted to the inner workings of the electric signal. Acting almost as a meditation, through the simple gesture of translation Elliott's process begins to reveal itself as electricity is converted into acoustic pressure and potential; the melody of physics. The six recordings on the album are each a microcosmic view into Elliott's practice; a keystone, illuminating his solo practice as well as his work as a member of EMERALDS. Composed and recorded over the past three years without the use of digital synthesizers and arpeggiation; a record closely connected to a personal path, attempting to make sense, to understand one's journey. Mastered by KEITH FULLERTON WHITMAN; pressed in an edition of 650 copies on clear vinyl with full color gloss covers and heavy stock printed Euro-style inner sleeves.
OUTER SPACE / RAGLANI "Split" (Nihilist - NIHIL 67) LP (LPOUTERRagl)
***Quite synthesizerish and pleasantly mindbending. Guest appearance by C. SPENCER YEH on the RAGLANI side. Artwork by JEREMY KANNAPELL (GHOST ICE). Edition of 500.
CLUSTER & FARNBAUER "Live" (Important - IMPREC 308) DBL.CD (UPC: 793447530826 - CDCLUSTLive)
***Live in Vienna is the eighth full-length album by German electronic music outfit CLUSTER and their first and only album with JOSHI FARNBAUER. It is the first of three live albums recorded by Cluster. Until now Cluster & Farnbauer had never been reissued on compact disc. On June 12, 1980 Cluster performed at the Wiener Festwochen Alternativ with Farnbauer. The performance was recorded and released as a limited edition cassette on the British York House Records (YHR) label. It was reissued in Germany on the Transmitter label of "Gruene Kraft" owner Werner Pieper. The style of the music is highly experimental and discordant and very reminiscent of Moebius and Rodelius' early work with Conrad Schnitzler in Kluster, albeit with updated electronic instrumentation. Live in Vienna was the only Cluster release never reissued on CD and this CD reissue includes archival material as well as newly mastered audio & new artwork created by Cluster member Dieter Mobius.
HOTOTOGISU "Floating Japanese Oof! Gardens Of The 21st Century" (Important - IMPREC 307) DBL.CD
(UPC: 793447530628 - CDHOTOTFloa) ***Floating Japanese Oof! Gardens Of The 21st Century was originally released on the DeStijl label in 2005 spread out over 3 LPs in hand glued packaging featuring colorful prints of MATTHEW BOWER's compelling artwork. To date this remains a singular release in the Hototogisu discography.
RUSKO "Hold On" (Mad Decent - MAD 112) 12" (UPC: 891063002380 - LPRUSKOHold)
***Dubstep's first big crossover star comes out swinging with his chart topping hit "Hold On" featuring AMBER COFFMAN of the DIRTY PROJECTORS. Combining his signature sound with Coffman's soaring vocals, RUSKO has created the perfect crossover single to bring the dubstep genre into the mainstream. "Hold On" has been getting attention ever since the O.M.G. album was released: It has flown up the UK charts getting B-listed on Radio 1, and the brand new video for it recently debuted on Pitchfork and NME. For this single release, "Hold On" gets the remix treatment from some of the hottest artists in the game. DnB mastermind SUBFOCUS stormed the blogs recently with his version of the track which has the largest build up / drop we've heard all year. UK electro pioneer TOM STEPHAN transforms "Hold On" into a big room electro house banger fit for any raver's playlist, while 12TH Planet pushes the bass lower than we ever thought possible.
DIPLO "Top Ranking" (Mad Decent - MAD 088) CD (UPC: 614325626229 - CDDIPLOTop)
***BACK IN STOCK!!! DIPLO goes off in a dub chamber of remix special guest exclusive madness! This collaboration mix CD brings together the best of Diplo's scatterbrained mixtape genius. There are thirty-five tracks here (filling up the entire CD), including a exclusives made just for this mix. Fully tracked and housed in deluxe digipack.
ILL "Ill The World" (Heartfast - HFCD 006) CD (UPC: 884501374538 - CDILLIll)
***A North American collection of the best songs released by K/Ioon Sony Music in Japan (2006-2010). KOJI NAKAMURA's (aka iLL) previous band SUPERCAR was part of the New Tokyo Sound scene (along with Cornelius, OOIOO, Yura Yura Teikoku and Boris), and now as iLL, he shows his remarkable talents both as remixer and musician. Deluxe silver foil packaging.
MOSES CAMPBELL "Who Are You? Who Is Anyone?" (olFactory - OFR 18) CD (UPC: 844553028001 -CDMOSESWho)
MOSES CAMPBELL "Who Are You? Who Is Anyone?" (olFactory - OFR 18) LP (LPMOSESWho(
***MOSES CAMPBELLl is a band. Based out of Los Angeles and formed in 2008 the majority of the band met while still in high school. Their songs are catchy and soulful. They would sound perfect 'round a campfire as they do in sweaty all-ages clubs. A blend of anti-folk, punk, and touches of pop, the band's influences range from Nirvana, The Widow Babies, Dirty Three, Brian Wilson, and The Contortions. Live shows are packed with kids eager to spazz out, dance and sing along to the some of the band's better known songs like "Dano's The Man" and "Ugly." Comparisons to a more stripped down, raw Okervil River or The Mountain Goats may be made upon listening to the well-crafted songwriting of their upcoming debut album Who Are You? Who Is Anyone? (olFactory Records/ Static Aktion, No Girls Allowed). But it's their unexpected hooks using accordion and dual vocals and that set them apart. The album is like a
diary set to music with wry observations on relationships, first love and everyday life. The band is young, but have the musical skills and ideas of far more mature players.
JERRY GRANELLI "1313" (Divorce - D 35) LP (LPGRANE1313)
***JERRY GRANELLI has lived a mythic life. He drummed in some of the biggest jazz outfits of the '50s-'60s, including VINCE GUARALDI TRIO and the DENNY ZEITLIN TRIO. Like many of his peers, Granelli could have played it safe and made a comfortable career doing traditional jazz into his old age, but instead he dove into the new worlds of free and psychedelic music that were opening up around him during the hippie era in San Francisco. In the early '60s he led one of the first free jazz bands in America. They did a three month opening spot for Lenny Bruce and toured extensively through Europe with the Grateful Dead, playing completely wild and spontaneous sets night after night, often to the scorn of unsuspecting audiences. A few years later he joined LIGHT SOUND DIMENSION (LSD), an outfit that paired marathons of free, amplified jazz with projection painting, effectively launching the first ever psychedelic light and sound event at the San Francisco Art Museum in 1967. LSD was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Since those early years Jerry has played with an impressive list of innovators including Bruce Frisell, Ornette Coleman, Jamie Saft, and Anthony Braxton to name just a few. And at 70 he still travels the world playing and teaching new music. Despite all his accomplishments, until Divorce asked, Granelli had yet to make a solo drum record. No one, including Jerry, knew what to expect, but the results are remarkable. All the tracks on 1313 except one were played with no overdubs, and most were done in a single take. 1313 is dark, masterful, and bravely unique-an outstanding new exploration of percussion and sound by a man who has been challenging himself musically for 60-plus years. Engineered by CHARLES AUSTIN, produced by Austin, Granelli and DARCY SPIDLE, and mastered by WEASEL WALTER. harles Austin. Produced by Charles Austin, Jerry Granelli, and Darcy Spidle. Art by Yo Rodeo.
TONY CARO AND JOHN "All On The First Day" (Gaarden - GAARD LP 004) LP (LPTONY All)
***BACK IN STOCK!!! A reissue of the obscure yet classic psych folk gem All On The First Day by TONY CARO AND JOHN. Originally released in 1972, this album was somehow buried in the "stuff drawer" of time to be recently rediscovered by those inclined to look. The band was featured on the British Love Peace & Poetry LP and had Baltimore group Beach House cover their "Snowdon Song" on their debut album (re-titling it "Lovelier Girl"). Somewhere between the whimsy of The Incredible String Band and the stark beauty of Vashti Bunyan lie Tony Caro and John.
CHARLIE LOUVIN "Hickory Wind - Live at the Gram Parsons Guitar Pull Waycross, GA" (Tompkins Square - TSQ 2363) CD (UPC: 894807002363 - CDLOUVIHick) ***On February 22, 1956, THE LOUVIN BROTHERS warmed up for Elvis Presley at City Auditorium in Waycross, GA. On hand was a nine year old boy named GRAM PARSONS. It would leave an indelible mark on the future legend, who went on to popularize several Louvin Brothers songs for the ages. On September 19, 2009, CHARLIE LOUVIN returned to Waycross to pay tribute to the granddaddy of "Alt Country"/ "Americana", singing "Hickory Wind" for the first time ever, as well as Louvin Brothers songs Gram either recorded or must have heard in his early years. If Gram is the granddaddy, Charlie is the great-granddaddy; a Country Music Hall of Famer, and a legend in the truest sense of the word.
CLOUD NOTHINGS "Turning On" (Speakertree - SPKR 001) LP (UPC: 040321915928 - LPCLOUDTurn)
***AVAILABLE AGAIN!!! The infectious debut from Cleveland-based CLOUD NOTHINGS is an unexpected and energetic dose of fuzzy bedroom pop songs. These maxed-out jams pick apart the space between youth and adulthood, flippantly avoiding both. Turning On is a nine song full length with chiming guitars and undeniably catchy hooks tucked perfectly under a layer of home-recorded fuzz. The LP comes with a free card to download all MP3s from the record. The band also has a 7-inch available on Group Tightener.
VERTICAL SLIT "Slit and Pre-Slit" (Smudge - LPVERTISLIT) LP (LPVERTISlit)
***BACK IN STOCK!!! "Originally released in a vanity pressing of 100 copies, this debut by JAMES MICHAEL SHEPARD & VERTICAL SLIT has long been a holy grail item on many a collectors list. Legend has it almost 1/4th of the pressing ended up in the hands of luminaries such as Todd Rundgren, John Cale, Robert Fripp & Peter Hamill to name but a few. Musically this stands toe to toe with the cream of Nurse With Wound list prog obscuros AND Acid Archives psych outsiders. QWEL & MAKER "Owl" (Galapagos 4 - G4CD 0050) CD (UPC: 708509005020 - CDQWEL Owl)
(STREET DATE - 9/14/2010) ***QWEL and MAKER raise the bar to its apex once again with Owl. The ominous and foreboding title epitomizes the duo who Rolling Stone describes as creating "stark, biographical songs that occupy the same bleak terrain as Francis Bacon paintings or The Dark Knight." Owl is a masterpiece from alpha to omega. No fluff, no filler, just raw unadulterated underground hip hop. Maker has etched a name with the greatest musicians to date and Owl is no exception. Qwel is considered by many to be to songwriting what Van Gogh is to painting, scraping vibrant and often harsh realities across the canvas of hard drums and uncompromising sound that Maker provides. On Owl, their 3rd full length together, Qwel and Maker take no prisoners.

A LOSS FOR WORDS "Motown Classics" (Paper + Plastick - PP 054) CD (UPC: 633757223127 - CDA LOSMoto)
***Boston's pop-punk quintet A LOSS FOR WORDS make their Paper + Plastick Records debut with a Motown covers album! "Our band listens to anything from American Nightmare to Coldplay to New Found Glory, and everything in between,"says vocalist MATTY ARSENAULT. "I grew up listening to R&B and have always wanted to do something like this! We just felt it was the perfect time to try something new and have some fun with it. We're very excited for everyone to hear us spice up some classic R&B hits!" A Loss For Words recorded the 10-song cover album with Chris Curran at Webster Lake Studios in Boston, and reworked classic R&B and Motown songs from the Jackson 5, Four Tops, Marvin Gaye and more. The band has been performing select covers on the road, including their acoustic take on The Temptations 'My Girl." The album version is a pop-punk gem which features additional vocals from Jordan Brown of Set Your Goals, while fellow Boston-ites Dan O'Connor and Alan Day of Four Year Strong make a vocal appearance on the Jackson 5 track. This album marks the band's first release with the assistance of a US label, having self-released three EPs and their 2009 full-length debut The Kids Can't Lose (which is available in Japan via In-N-Out Records).
BANNER PILOT "Resignation Day (Reissue)" (Fat Wreck Chords - FAT 759) CD (UPC: 751097075920-dbannerere)
BANNER PILOT "Resignation Day (Reissue)" (Fat Wreck Chords - FAT 759) LP (UPC: 751097075913-lpbannerere)
(STREET DATE - 9/14/2010) ***In the months since the release of their second full-length, Collapser, BANNER PILOT have proven to be the kind of upstart outfit that garners more praise with every move they make. With a vastly larger fan-base, greater visibility, and increased recognition from critics and fans, the Minneapolis quartet decided it was high time to revisit their first full-length, Resignation Day. After getting their foot in the door with the release of an EP, the band truly cemented their position among the elite bands to hail from the vibrant Midwest punk scene with Resignation Day. Unfortunately, the time and budget constraints that often hamper recording left an indelible mark on the record. Eager to ride the surging tide of momentum they had created, Banner Pilot permitted the final product to be released despite some misgivings about the sound quality of the album. Fast forward to a couple years down the road, amidst the growing success of Collapser the band resolved to remix and remaster Resignation Day in hopes of capturing the sound they had originally envisioned. Auspiciously, the new version surpasses expectations and brings the sound quality up to par with the masterful songwriting and musicianship on the original recordings. The end result is an album that maintains a nearly impossible balance between unbridled youthful energy and maturely crafted unforgettable melodies. In addition, Banner Pilot decided to add two tracks that were not included on the first incarnation of Resignation Day. That, coupled with the fact that the initial pressing, advertising, and publicity were extremely limited, will provide ample incentive for established and newer fans to pick up this release.

BEETS "Locomotion" (Captured Tracks - CT 044) 7" (07BEETSLoco)
***Jackson Heights, Queens' favorite sons THE BEETS return to the 7-inch format with two exclusive tracks. Recorded by JARVIS TAVENIERE of WOODS and featuring some lead guitar by JB TOWNSEND of CRYSTAL STILTS. Neither of these tracks appear on the forthcoming Stay Home LP due in October. As always, you get killer MATT VOLZ art to go with.
DUCKTAILS "Mirror Image" (Shdwply - SHDWPLY 017) 7" (07DUCKTMirr)
***"Total bliss-out gem from MATT MONDANILE (aka DUCKTAILS), offering two nostalgia-warped avant-pop picks on Shdwply. Compared with the last few, 2010 has been a quiet year for Ducktails, this being his first solo release of the year and all, but dude's obviously just been chilling, going on a road trip or hanging out at the beach or something. On the A-side, 'Apple Walk' sounds like he just got home after a long hot day and laid his vibe straight onto 4-track, making for 3 minutes of distorted jangle and flanged vocals with a sublime intention. With 'Mirror Image Index' on the flip he enters a slightly stranger zone, a few hours down the line and the air is still warm and the effect is a little druggier, imbuing his looped drums, woozy organ and spiraling synth with a lilting, almost African sense of psyched repetition. Magical."-Boomkat
UV RACE "I Hate You" (Fashionable Idiots - FIR 041) 7" (07UV RAI Ha)

TOTAL CONTROL "Paranoid Video" (Smart Guy - SMART 028) 7" (07TOTALPara)
***"TOTAL CONTROL (members of EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING, SOVIET VALVES, STRAIGHTJACKET NATION and UV RACE) has, without question, an ace pedigree. But don't get too hung up on it as they're not coasting along on where they've been. They're all about what they're doing now and ready to find out where that takes them. And guess what-you're invited. What does Total Control sound like? To my ears they owe a debt to Gary Numan, Eno, Suicide, The Normal, Screamers, and Brainiac. Thankfully they're paying that debt by creating something new. The songs are deceptively simple while also provocative. Guitars, bass, drums, synths and vocals. An occasional beat you can dance to and at other times epic bliss that washes over you and you want to do anything but dance. But don't listen to me-decide for yourself..."-SmartGuy. Edition of 500 copies. Touring the US in September, including a slot at Gonerfest in Memphis.
